Why You Should Leave Etsy and Sell on Your Own Website

Etsy is a great place to sell your products, but it also has limitations. Moving from Etsy to your own website will help you gain more opportunities to create new customer touchpoints and repeat business because you’ll have more control over your store and it will be the source of your customer’s satisfaction and value. In this blog, I’m sharing why you should move from Etsy to your own website.

Etsy would be an attractive option to crafters, creators, and people who put love into their products but it may not be the best option for you if you wanted to keep the profit in your pocket and build a business that you own.

Etsy is a marketplace

When a shopper is interested in a product that you sell and they go to a marketplace environment to purchase that product, there will also be other seller recommendations. If you work hard to drive traffic to Etsy, it will be challenging to keep someone’s attention. They can easily get distracted with all other recommendations.

You don’t fully own your customer list

When someone buys from you on Etsy, they’ll purchase something on Etsy and they’ll not associate the purchase to you as a seller. Etsy owns the customer list and will gain more return customers on the platform instead of your store. It will be easier to market to your customers if they purchase directly on your website with less competition from other sellers on Etsy.

Fees

Since Etsy is providing sellers a system and traffic to the marketplace, they collect fees from sellers. It will be hard to be profitable for a small business owner when you always share fees with a marketplace.

These are some of the reasons why you should decide to move to your own website. There are different ways to start a store like Shopify, Squarespace, or WordPress. If you are going to sell on Etsy, make it a secondary and passive option. Put all your marketing effort and resources into your own website.
